POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Transportation Operations Division of the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) presents an exceptional opportunity to join a highly successful Electrical Inspection team as Signal ITS Inspection Supervisor (Civil Engineering Specialist, Supervisor).

This position is one of three SDOT electrical inspectors responsible for overseeing the construction and inspection of all elements related to the Traffic Management System infrastructure within the City of Seattle Right-of-Way. This position reports to the Signal ITS Inspection Supervisor, located at 4200 Airport Way South in Seattle, WA. 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform electrical inspections of the Traffic Management System infrastructure, including the traffic signal system and all ITS devices, constructed on City streets for SDOT, whether it is through a CIP project, private contract, or internal project.
  • Monitor and verify information for construction related projects associated with signals, ITS, and associated lighting aspects.
  • Be well versed in the rules of the NEC, the City of Seattle's Plans and Specifications, as well as the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways for construction in the City right-of-way.
  • Act as a liaison between consultants, contractors, subcontractors, manufacturers, fabricators, or suppliers and the City.
  • Negotiate problems of changes, errors or deficiencies, and ensure compliance with project specifications and requirements.
  • Ensure and enforce compliance with terms of permits authorizing construction projects and controlling use of public properties and facilities.
  • Experience with personal computers and various software applications, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Windows, and Outlook.
  • Demonstrate, on a daily basis, good judgment and organizational skills, the ability to deal with conflicting priorities, short deadlines, and multi-functionality.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience
  • An Associate Degree in Civil Engineering Technology or two years of college level coursework in engineering and construction technology.
  • Five (5) years of Civil Engineering experience, including two (2) years of supervisory experience.
  • Traffic engineering experience.
  • Other combinations of education, training, and/or experience that provide an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class may be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability.
  • Ability to effectively work in a multicultural workplace with a diverse customer base.
Work Environment/Physical Demands
  • Work will be in both field and office environments.
  • Field assignments entail exposure to all weather conditions, traffic, hazardous or toxic substances, and work in or near construction sites.
  • Ability to work in the street next to moving traffic.
  • May be required to lift over 50 pounds.
  • Required to stand, bend, and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Overtime may be required, and possibly off hours in support of contractor schedules.
Licensing/Certification Requirements
  • Current Washington State Driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
Desired Qualifications
  • Five years of traffic or civil engineering experience, and extensive knowledge or experience with Traffic Signal construction in the field, ITS applications, computerized signal systems, traffic signal controllers, traffic engineering practices, and traffic signal operations.
  • Possession of a Washington State Journeyman Electrician's License (ELO1).
  • Excellent customer service and problem solving skills.
  • Flagging Card and a First Aid/CPR card.
